// design director / hailey soren _
born: toronto, ontario, canada
education:
Hailey brings a locally grown spirit to softfirm. Born in Toronto, but raised in California, her design education includes time at both California Polytechnic - San Luis Obispo and the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC). The combination of CalPoly’s rural setting and its technical program focused on structural, environmental, and mechanical design coupled with SCI-ARC ‘s urban, more experimental and progressive curriculum provided Hailey a grounded, design-oriented foundation based in exploration and investigation.
Having spent several years working for Clive Wilkinson Architects, an acclaimed, award winning Los Angeles based Interior Architecture firm, Hailey focused primarily on the design of custom interiors for large creative companies. Projects for clients such as JWT, Chiat Day and Google allowed her to explore her deep interest in graphic design and investigate the idea of “graphic space” in architecture and the workplace. Her graphic sensibility was beneficial in working with clients such as Quiksilver and Speedo on flagship stores for each brand.
Hailey served as project architect on the award winning FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) Annex space in Los Angeles. Ushering the FIDM project from concept to completion, she acted as the design voice during every aspect of design, documentation, and construction management. The experience gained through this project galvanized her ability to lead projects and led to her work on the award winning, Google Headquarters in Mountain View, California, where she was a vital member of the team credited for winning the competition and developing the 300,000 square foot interior architecture project.
In addition to her architecture and graphic design experience, Hailey brings in-depth knowledge of furniture and interior finishes to softfirm. In 2005, Hailey was invited by Vitra to their headquarters in Weil am Rhein to gain first hand knowledge of their product line and unique capabilities. Her understanding of furniture and finishes was most recently tested while working with brand agency JWT on their new headquarters in New York City. Hailey interfaced between the client and three major furniture manufacturers to orchestrate complex furniture mockups prior to purchasing office and social space furniture for the project. She continued to work directly with JWT to create and manage their furniture budget, acting as the point of contact for all furniture manufacturers and dealers. Ultimately, she was responsible for specifying all the furniture and finishes for the 250,000 square foot creative office space featured in Interior Design Magazine’s September, 2008 issue.
